Merit Badges Clicking on the program names will open a page with class descriptions. Not all offered classes are merit badges. Read for age requirements and pre-requisites carefully. Suggestions for 1st year Scouts are to take
Swimming and
First Aid (if not already done at UT or Camp Strake).
The following list of badges can be taught by troop counselors if you are having trouble fitting in everything:
Fishing, Forestry, Mammal Study, Lifesaving, Citizenship in the Nation, and Music.
Suggested merit badges for 1st years are Fish and Wildlife, Nature, Geology, Photography(must bring camera), Motor Boating, Leatherwork, Woodcarving, Pottery/Sculpture, Art/Textiles, Canoeing, and Basketry.
Merit badges that might be taken but that may be more difficult to complete are: Soil and Water, Fishing, Space Exploration, Weather, Archeology, Indian Lore, Citizenship in the World, Communications, Fire Safety, and Animal Science.
Based on experience, we suggest that first year scouts
NOT take Environmental Science, Reptile and Amphibian, Small Boat Sailing, Metalworking, Shotgun, Rifle, Cooking, Orienteering, Wilderness Survival, Pioneering, Emergency Prep, Climbing, Archery. Many of these require strength that 1st year Scouts do not have. Some are very bookish in nature and have homework that would have to be done at the campsites. If you have questions about recommendations, please ask
jsteidle@sbcglobal.net.
